Class Descriptions: Fall 2023

Sunday Combo Classes:

Tumble and Twirl (Pre-K and Kindergarten) with Ms. Emily Lucas: Join us for a playful and exciting beginner’s dance and gymnastics class.  There will be both basic ballet skills and safe intro to gymnastics stretches and exercises.  Part dance, part tumbling, and loads of fun.

Although these class will open for re-enrollment in the Winter/Spring, priority will be given to the students who have already been in the class and in previous years, this has meant that many students are shut out of the Winter/Spring session.  Additionally, it means that the majority of the class has taken already, which means your daughter will be behind and playing catch up to these students, which at this age is often a real challenge and not good for their self-esteem.  Therefore we recommend you enroll in the Fall Session, but it is not required.

Jazz Classes

All jazz classes are fun and upbeat dance classes danced to Jewish music or non-Jewish music without lyrics.  Students will gain skills in basic jazz technique and terminology, as well as working on leaps and turns, progressively put together in more complicated and intricate sequences. These classes will not open for enrollment in the Winter/Spring.  All students who wish to participate must be enrolled in the Fall Session in order to gain the technique necessary to successfully master choreography for the spring performance.

Jazz I (1st and 2nd grade):  This class is intended for the beginner student who has never taken dance before, or who has only taken a year of a beginner class.

Jazz II (3rd-4th), Jazz III (5th-6th), and Middle School Jazz : These classes are intended for students who have taken at least one year of ballet or jazz class before and have a basic understanding of positions (turned out and parallel) and know and understand basic terminology including plie, tendu, degage, battement, pas de bourree, pirouette, grand jete.  Potential students who wish to join these classes who have not taken classes before need to speak with Mrs. Penn before enrolling.

Jazz Boot Camp: For Girls in Grades 5th and up who are interested in taking jazz with their classmates but who have not taken dance before must register for Jazz Boot Camp, a 10-class mini-session to get a handle on terminology and basic fundamentals in order to be successful in jazz class with their peers.  Please note this will be a small boost to help them in the class in general but they will still feel behind and have some catching up to do.  Please make sure they are highly motivated and truly want to learn dance (not just for the social outlet before enrolling in class and the Boot Camp.
